Kyiv Hosts the Presentation of Ukraine’s First Educational Mini-Series on LGBTQ+ Military Personnel on the Diia.Education Platform
On 16 July 2026 at 4:00 PM, a presentation of the first educational mini-series about LGBTQ+ military personnel in Ukraine took place in Kyiv at 41 Kyrylivska Street. The series was created based on comprehensive research into the experiences of LGBTQ+ people serving in the military. The series is now available on the Diia.Education platform.
The mini-series was developed by the NGO “Ukrainian LGBTQ+ Military for Equal Rights” based on comprehensive research on LGBTQ+ military personnel in Ukraine. The educational project explains key topics related to the LGBTQ+ community in the military sphere, including common myths, the basic concepts of sexual orientation and gender identity, the historical and political origins of homophobia, the rights of LGBTQ+ people, experiences of discrimination, challenges within military units, and practical mechanisms for protecting one’s rights. During the event, a promotional video for the educational mini-series about LGBTQ+ military personnel, which is available on the Diia.Education platform, was presented. The series was created primarily for military personnel and explains how prejudice and discrimination affect trust, safety, and interaction within military units.
“The military becomes stronger where there is trust, respect for rights, and a safe environment for everyone. The higher the level of inclusion in the military, the more people are willing to serve and remain in the system. That is why this mini-series is intended primarily for military personnel—it provides the language, facts, and practical guidance for addressing LGBTQ+ issues within military units,” said Oleksandr Demenko, Chair of the NGO “Ukrainian LGBTQ+ Military for Equal Rights.”
The NGO “Ukrainian LGBTQ+ Military for Equal Rights” is an organization that brings together LGBTQ+ military personnel and veterans. It works to protect their rights, increase the visibility of LGBTQ+ people in the military, and support veterans after their return from the front.
The research was conducted by the NGO “Ukrainian LGBTQ+ Military for Equal Rights” as part of a project implemented in partnership with the NGO “Fulcrum UA” and with expert support from the NGO “Institute of Gender Programs”, with financial support from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ukraine.
