A psychological group session “Understanding the Masks We Wear” took place in Kyiv.
On September 28 in Kyiv, a psychological group took place dedicated to the theme “Understanding the Masks We Wear” — the roles and defense mechanisms each of us puts on in everyday life. They help us interact with the world, but at the same time can sometimes prevent us from remaining true to ourselves.
During the meeting, participants together with the psychologist explored which masks they use in different situations, created their own masks in an art-therapy process, and shared their experiences. They also discussed in which cases these defense mechanisms are helpful, and when — on the contrary — they distance us from other people.
The group program included:
- introductions and an opening game “How do I want the world to see me?”;
- setting rules for a safe and trusting atmosphere;
- a short theoretical part about psychological defense mechanisms and types of “masks”;
- an art-therapy session “Masks” using different materials;
- discussion of examples of “masks” in literature, cinema, and everyday life.
Participants noted that such practice helps to better understand themselves and their reactions, as well as to feel more clearly the difference between the authentic “Self” and social roles.
