A psychological support group for young members of minority communities took place in Kyiv
On January 11, 2025, the next psychological therapy group for young members of the minority community took place. The group was organized as part of supporting mental health and personal development. Participants had the opportunity to freely express their feelings, experiences, and questions related to their identity, as well as receive professional help in overcoming stress and challenges associated with social or internal struggles.
The following topics were discussed during the therapeutic group:
Psychology as a Path to Self-Discovery
One of the main aspects of the therapeutic meeting was discussing the importance of psychotherapy for self-discovery. Psychology enables individuals to better understand themselves, recognize their feelings and emotions, and uncover the roots of stress and conflicts. With the help of a professional therapist, each participant can explore new horizons of their own “self.”
How Therapy Works and Who Is a Psychologist?
Psychotherapy is a process where a psychologist or psychotherapist works with a patient to resolve their psychological issues. It is important to understand that a psychologist does not provide ready-made solutions, but helps individuals find their own answers to the questions that concern them. A psychologist can conduct both individual and group sessions aimed at providing support and helping to overcome difficulties.
Why Psychotherapy and Not Just a Conversation with Friends?
While support from friends and loved ones is important, psychotherapy has a number of advantages. A psychologist has special knowledge and skills that allow them to work with deep emotional issues and conflicts. A psychotherapist provides a neutral environment for self-expression, without judgment and maintaining objectivity.
What Results Can Therapy Bring?
The results of therapy can vary: from improved well-being and reduced stress levels to profound changes in one’s attitude toward themselves and the world around them. After undergoing the therapeutic process, participants may feel more confident, relieved from internal conflicts, and gain a clearer understanding of their needs and desires.
Psychologists, Psychotherapists, and Psychiatrists: What’s the Difference?
Participants also had the opportunity to learn the differences between psychologists, psychotherapists, and psychiatrists. A psychologist typically does not treat mental disorders but helps people understand and cope with emotions, behavior, and relationships. A psychotherapist works with therapeutic techniques to address deeper psychological issues, while a psychiatrist has a medical education and can prescribe medication for treating mental illnesses.
Addressing the Needs of minority Individuals
The unique needs of the minority community, including challenges with identity acceptance, stigma, or social prejudices, were important topics for discussion during the therapy. Psychotherapy helps participants receive the support they need to overcome these barriers and find paths to emotional well-being.
Therapeutic groups like this help minority individuals feel heard, understood, and supported in their personal development and self-acceptance. An important component of these groups is the community support, which creates an atmosphere of safety and trust.
By participating in this group therapy, attendees gained new insights, tools for working with their emotions, and support in the process of self-discovery. The community formed around such events allows everyone to be part of an open and accepting environment.
